Primary school, Years 5 – 9
- From Rainforest to Desert
Why do different parts of the world have different plant and animal species and why are some species so alike despite the physical distance?
Zoography – describing individual biomes and explaining terms such as biodiversity and endemism. In the next part of the programme, the students learn to arrange individual species into their appropriate categories. - Domestic Animals
Are you familiar with the process of domestication in the past century and do you know the ancestors of common domestic animals?
The programme addresses native as well as exotic domestic animals, breeding methods, benefits to humans, domestication, “welfare”, and organic farming. Children will have an opportunity to interact with the animals in their enclosures. - Animal Behaviour
How does a zebra sleep? What does a whinny or a neigh mean in animal language? Why does the lynx yowl?
The programme sheds some light on the types of communication and behaviour patterns of various species, their eating habits, and rearing of their young. Students are given a chance to make an attempt at carrying out their own ethological study, writing the information gathered in their worksheets. Results are then discussed at a group meeting. - World of Birds
Did you know that birds use the earth’s magnetic field to navigate?
We will meet various species of water and exotic birds, birds of prey, and birds that live in the surrounding forests. Throughout the programme students are encouraged to fill in their worksheets and are introduced to a variety of products of nature while learning many interesting things about bird life. - Animal Protection
One animal species disappears every day. Why? The red list of endangered species contains over 5000 animals.
The programme includes meeting endangered species of animals, learning about problems related to preserving biodiversity, getting to know organizations engaged in protecting endangered species, and finding out the true purpose behind Zoological Gardens. Children also reflect on the irresponsible behaviour of other people, such as hunting for profit, poaching and so on.
