Czech Union for Nature Conservation of the Hodonín Zoo (ČSOP)

The Zoo chapter of the Union is based at the Educational Centre. If you would like to actively participate in nature conservation projects, come and join us!

Our main goal is to take part in cultural and educational activities organized by the Hodonín Zoo, such as Earth Day, Children’s Day, World Animal Day, etc. Our organization also monitors protected species and interesting biotope habitats.
For further information on ČSOP visit their website at www.csop.cz.

Young Natural Scientists’ Station

If you are between twelve and eighteen, nature is your hobby, and want to become a young specialist, join the Young Natural Scientists’ Station! Our main activities include field work and the processing of results in the station’s classroom (taking pictures, making audio and video records of animals, installing photo traps, working with a microscope, processing of results using a PC, and creating educational presentations for schools).

Zoo clubs:

Lama club

Under the supervision of Lenka Matějková, a zookeeper in charge of lamas, horses, and camels, and the director of the Eco centre Iva Uhrová, the children learn to train, feed, and groom the lamas as well as to put a halter on the lama’s head. They also help clean the stalls and enclosures. An essential part of the two-hour meetings on Thursday afternoons is a half-hour long theory lesson, which often goes well beyond the set agenda. In addition to lamas, the children learn to handle foals of the Fiord horse, sheep, and they take an interest in camel breeding, too. When the weather is unfavourable, they watch educational programmes or work on various tests in the classroom of the Educational Centre. The preparing of presentations of animals the children attend to and recording all their activities in the journal of the Lama club are additional assignments they can enjoy. Members of the Lama club actively participate in organizing cultural and educational events for the public.
Would you like to join us? All you need is to submit an application approved by your doctor and signed by both of your parents.

Owlets

Owlets is a field club consisting of pupils attending the Primary School U Červených domků, Hodonín. They come every second Wednesday of every month to spend some time with our animals and to further learn. The primate zookeeper, Petra Bílková, and her colleague Lukáš Baránek lead a group of fifteen children aged between eight and eleven. Each lesson addresses a different animal group, both in theory and practice. The children have an opportunity to visit each animal and occasionally take a look inside their living quarters. “They are very knowledgeable in the subject of zoology and take an unusual interest in the individual topics. It’s a joy to work with them,” Petra Bílková complements her students who come here accompanied by their tutor, Alena Václavíková.
